David L. Tarbet is an Associate in the Trusts and Estate Planning Group, with a specific emphasis on tax planning issues and disputes.  He also provides tax advice for transactional matters and compensation planning, and representation in tax controversy matters. 

Mr. Tarbet tax background is exceptionally useful in helping clients understand and recognize potential gift and estate tax issues impacting their overall estate planning goals.  Through the use of projections and estimates of potential estate tax obligations, Mr. Tarbet is able to help clients implement strategies to minimize potential estate tax liabilities while accomplishing their primary estate planning goals, such as wealth preservation, family cohesiveness, and charitable giving.

Mr. Tarbet enjoys working with his clients and is able to simplify and explain complex issues that arise within trusts and estate planning.  He is able to work with clients in understanding the unique planning opportunities for people with disabilities and individuals with large tax deferred accounts.  Furthermore, Mr. Tarbet is able to help explain and give counsel regarding issues relating to the funding of separate trusts on the death of a married person. 

In additional to tax guidance relating to his estate planning practice, Mr. Tarbet also assists clients with general income tax guidance and representation before the Internal Revenue Service and other taxing agencies.  Mr. Tarbet has helped clients with federal and state income tax questions, employment tax issues, and property tax issues.  He also works with clients to understand and minimize the tax aspects of transactions and has worked with non-profit organizations in obtaining and maintaining their tax exempt status. 

Additionally, Mr. Tarbet works with the Labor & Employment Group to provide advice regarding the design, administration, and restructuring of compensation plans, including qualified and non-qualified deferred compensation plans.  Mr. Tarbet can help put a qualified plan into place and maintain compliance with the fast-changing tax and ERISA rules, whether the client is a large or small corporation, a tax-exempt entity, or a state or local government.

PERSONAL

Mr. Tarbet is married and has two daughters and two sons.  He and his wife worked as licensed foster parents and welcomed a variety of children into their home.
